What is Ashtanga Yoga?
Ashtanga Yoga is unlike any other yoga style. Ashtanga is a system which means it is characterized by it’s organized framework and method. The method of practice taught in Ashtanga relies on linking postures with deep, even breathing and steady gazing with the eyes. This is referred to as the Tristhana Method, meaning “three places”, and when executed properly, creates steadiness and strength within the body and mind - in other words, a moving meditation.
Ashtanga Yoga is primarily taught in two settings: the Mysore-style, which is a self-paced practice in a group setting, and the Led class, in which students practice in unison, instructed by the teacher using the traditional Sanskrit counting system. Most students learn the Ashtanga sequence in the Mysore room, where each pose is taught one by one until proficiency has been achieved. This ensures that the student is always met at their level of ability and given the care and attention needed to approach the postures safely and only when they are ready. Once a student has reached a certain point in their Mysore practice, they are ready to attend the Led class.
Practicing Ashtanga Yoga regularly will result in greater strength and flexibility of body, clarity of thought and enhanced control of emotions.
